Urology is a specialty that deals with diseases urinary tract (kidneys, ureters, bladder and urethra) of the male and female. The male reproductive organs (penis, testes, scrotum, prostate, etc.) also fall in the clinical purview of a urologist.
At its outset urology is a surgical specialty; however, an academic urologist is endowed with wisdom of almost all fields of medicine including pediatrics, internal medicine and gynecology since a urologist encounters a wide range of clinical problems. Over the years urology has come to encompass in its scope several subspecialties which are: Urologic Oncology, Pediatric Urology, Kidney Transplant, urinary tract stone disease, Male Infertility, Female Urology, Neurourology and Erectile Dysfunction and Men’s sexual health. They are therefore mindful of thorough work up for a diagnosis and treatment of urology patients.
An academic department of urology poised to be involved in-depth in the teaching and training of the undergraduate students. The department is equipped with excellent library and skills lab to meet the learning and training needs of the students.
The department aspires to build a postgraduate residency program and shall strive to establish a research program that is at the core of its mission. In the future it would like to bring a close alliance between basic and clinical research.
